Many people in the state of Oregon look at smoking marijuana as a low risk activity. That attitude contributes to its high rates of drug abuse- Oregon admits almost three times the national average number of people to its drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. After all, numerous studies show that many addictions begin with the person using such “low risk” substances as alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana.

As is the case in many other states, methamphetamine is a big problem in Oregon. The DEA says that it is one of the most frequently abused drugs statewide, and in 2006 meth use counted for almost twenty percent of admissions to Oregon’s substance abuse treatment centers, making it second to alcohol. The form that is widely used in Oregon, crystal meth, is the most damaging and highly addictive form of the drug. Meth isn’t the only problem that’s plaguing Oregon. Prescription drugs are quickly taking hold, especially among the younger segment of the population. Addiction to prescription medicines like Xanax, Oxycontin, and Percocet cuts across gender, age, and economic boundaries. Across America, prescription drugs are the second most used substance among the country’s youth. Those over sixty years old aren’t immune to the dangers- they are at high risk for prescription abuse. Opiates like Oxycontin and Vicodin are increasingly being used for nonmedical purposes, and casual use frequently leads to addiction. Like so many other states, Oregon’s prescription drug problem stems in part from the easy availability of the medicines. For a prescription drug addict, the next high is as close as their medicine cabinet.

Those that are seeking drug treatment in Oregon should know that not all centers are created equally. Of the two hundred twenty four rehab centers in the state, only twelve offer opiate addiction treatments, and only sixty eight doctors were allowed to dispense buprenorphine, which manages cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Those hooked on prescription opiates and needing treatment may have to try a little harder to find it, but it’s there.

Those that are reluctant to seek help because they think it’s too expensive should be glad of the fact that over half of all Oregon’s rehab centers receive some public funding. Sixteen percent of centers are state operated, and the rest are privately run, either for or not for profit. There are also nine treatment centers in Oregon that cater to Native Americans, also. Most centers work with local doctors and hospitals, making their services available to a greater part of the population.

Most people getting drug treatment in Oregon get treated on an outpatient basis. Those with more severe addictions can attend one of fifty residential treatment centers in Oregon, or go out of area for treatment. People and their families should consider all their options and talk to their doctor before making any decisions.
