The results from a 2007 survey that was sponsored by SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) are very telling. They report that a little over 20 million people in the US are in need of drug addiction recovery, but most are not getting it.

Addiction is a disease that doesn't discriminate- it can affect anyone- young, old, rich or poor. You may think that you are alone in dealing with a drug or alcohol addiction, but the truth is, many have traveled this path before you. You may want to get help, but aren't sure how to go about it. That's why we're here, and that's what drug and alcohol rehabilitation is for. When you're in rehab, you'll be surrounded with people who are going through the exact same problems as you, and you'll meet people who know how to help addicts move into the next sober phase of their lives.

The first step in getting clean is finding a drug or alcohol rehab facility that fits your needs and that you are comfortable with. Most people choose facilities where they can go and attend weekly meetings or daily treatments, but those that have deep-seated addictions may have to stay in a residential treatment facility. These places provide round-the-clock care and medical supervision, as well as an opportunity to heal in an environment removed from temptation and stress.

No matter where you live, there is a rehab center that can help you overcome your addiction to drugs and alcohol. However, even the most highly recommended treatment program won't work if you aren't comfortable there, or if you aren't 100% committed to getting (and staying) clean. To find the right fit for you, be prepared to travel further from home, or even out of the state. A willingness to go the extra mile can greatly expand your treatment options and give you the extra edge you'll need to successfully treat your addiction.

Are there any down sides to drug and alcohol addiction treatment? Yes, there are. Many people don't want to be away from their friends and family, but most rehabilitation facilities are more than accommodating when it comes to being able to have visitors. Being separated from family and loved ones is a big drawback, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives when it comes to getting treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction.

Addiction is a disease, and not a character flaw, as some people still think. There used to be a social stigma attached to drug addiction and alcoholism, but that is fading fast as most enlightened people have come to realize how addiction really happens. As most of us know, the best way to combat a drug or alcohol addiction is with early detection and treatment. If you or someone you care about is suffering from an addiction, or if you see the signs of drug abuse, you should get help immediately. Being addicted to drugs is hard, and sometimes admitting that there is a problem is even harder. However, the sooner you realize there is a problem, the sooner you can reach out for help. A drug-free and healthy way of life is just around the corner!

Of all the treatment options, self-help and support groups such as Narcotics Anonymous are far and away the most popular. These programs provide much-needed social and emotional support to people who are battling drug addiction. If they can’t help a person, they will refer them to someone who can. Support groups, along with a proper detox program, are absolutely essential parts of drug addiction treatment.
