To an extent, Ohio has enjoyed success in the fight against substance abuse. The state consistently ranks below the national average for many indicators- binge drinking, alcohol abuse, and the use of illegal drugs. This doesn’t mean that Ohio is immune to the drug crisis- quite the contrary. The DEA tells us that most serious crimes in the state are brought about by powder and crack cocaine. Ohio’s residents also have a lower perception of the risks of the use of marijuana and alcohol use. Ohio’s drug treatment centers also tell us that drug-only admissions are rising while alcoholism admissions are on the decline.

Ohio’s population is being threatened by some new foes. In the last ten years, methamphetamine sale and manufacture and prescription drug misuse have grown exponentially, bringing danger to areas that had never seen it before. The use of drugs like Oxycontin, Xanax, and Valium for nonmedical purposes not only creates an addiction that can be very tough to break, it brings death in the form of overdose and much more crime. Crackdowns by area police have had an unintended effect- because Oxycontin and related drugs are a lot harder to get now, many users are turning to heroin to get high. This is especially true for teenagers, who made up about thirteen percent of all admissions to Ohio’s drug and alcohol treatment centers.

There are a lot of options for people in Ohio that are seeking treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction. In 2006, there were four hundred twenty four rehab centers in the state, of which 82% were privately run and non profit, with thirty four private, for profit centers. The remaining few are owned by the government. Patients should know that “private” doesn’t mean they cannot get help there, because many of Ohio’s treatment facilities are publicly funded. Not all centers offer the same services, and only nineteen facilities statewide offer treatment for opiate addiction, and forty eight programs offer treatment with buprenorphine. Most drug treatment centers are run on an outpatient basis, and there are 115 centers in the state of Ohio that offer residential treatment. These programs are useful in treating long-term or deeply entrenched addictions, as well as allowing the addict a chance at recovery away from all the stress of daily life.

Like in other states, Ohio’s drug and alcohol recovery centers use counseling, detox, behavioral therapy, and support groups to ensure a positive outcome for the patient. People that are needing treatment need to be aware of all their options and be prepared to go out of state or out of area for treatment if necessary.
