Drug addiction is a serious problem in New Jersey, like it is in so many other places. Of all admissions to New Jersey’s drug and alcohol treatment centers, heroin accounted for 41% of them in 2006. According to the DEA, heroin is the biggest drug problem for the state. However, alcohol counted for almost eighteen percent of New Jersey rehab center admissions.

There are other drug problems plaguing New Jersey. Crack and powder cocaine, club drugs, marijuana, and prescription medications are seeing a lot of abuse as well. Abuse of prescription drugs like Oxycontin, Percocet, Valium, and Xanax is rising sharply in the state, due in no small part to the number of pharmaceutical companies there. In short, the recreational use of prescription drugs is both one of New Jersey’s biggest industries and its biggest problems.

There were 351 drug and alcohol rehab facilities in New Jersey in 2006, and they admitted almost fifty five thousand people that year. The state is consistently below the national average for the number of people who need drug or alcohol treatment but do not get it, thanks to efforts by the state to help its citizens get into a program that will meet their needs. The plentiful nature of New Jersey’s drug and alcohol rehab centers and the amount of money that the state spends on substance abuse treatment goes a long way toward ensuring that those who need help get it.

New Jersey residents seeking treatment for drug addiction have options. Most of New Jersey’s treatment facilities offer outpatient treatment, which is sufficient for many addicts. For those with stronger or more enduring addictions, there are sixty seven residential treatment centers in New Jersey. All patients should be aware of their options and be prepared to go afield to find the treatment that they need. All programs aren’t offered by all facilities. Those that are looking for treatment for an opiate addiction might have a harder time finding help, because only 37 programs statewide offer the service. Only 57 programs can administer buprenorphine. The ideal program would have a combination of detoxification, counseling, and behavior modification therapy. A complete approach will give the best chance at a positive outcome, because it will remove the person from the negative environment that brought about their drug use, help them learn to live without drugs, and learn new strategies to cope with stress.

While it’s hard to say for sure whether a certain patient will successfully kick their drug habit, one thing is for certain. Everyone going through drug and alcohol treatment in New Jersey should start by having a talk with their doctor, who will know all about the various treatment centers and approaches. Whatever kind of treatment is selected, early treatment is essential where drug and alcohol abuse are concerned.
