Minnesota’s substance abuse issues cross age and economic boundaries, as you can see in the graph below. The abuse of illegal drugs and alcohol are a huge threat to the state, and Minnesota ranks among the top ten binge-drinking states, and it also ranks high in the low risk perception of marijuana use. The Minnesota Department of Human Services’ 2009 report says that thirty one percent of college kids in Minnesota abuse alcohol, and six percent met the criteria for a diagnosis of alcoholism.
Drug and alcohol rehabilitation in the state of Minnesota is usually provided by a network of 263 public / private treatment facilities. In 2006, the most recent year for which we have data, Minnesota’s drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers admitted almost 48,000 patients. Most admissions were for alcohol (28.1%), marijuana (17.3%), amphetamines (11.2%), and alcohol and another substance (22.6%). Of all illegal drugs, marijuana is the most abused and widely available, with methamphetamine running a close second.
The opiate category as shown above includes Oxycontin, Vicodin, Dilaudid, and methadone. These are powerful prescription medications that are being increasingly used for recreational purposes. Over 17% of Americans over age 60 have unknowingly abused prescription medications such as these, while college and high school kids are taking them for the intense rush obtained when the pills are crushed and injected or snorted. Minnesota drug rehabilitation centers are not all created equal, so patients should examine all their options, whether they are local or statewide. Many people know about programs for opiate addiction that include medicines like methadone, but these are few and far between. Only 9 programs in Minnesota offered opioid treatment programs like this in 2006, and 31 programs and fifty seven physicians were allowed to dispense buprenorphine, another treatment for opiate addiction. If you need such a program, your search may take a little longer.
As is the case in many other states, many Minnesota rehabiliation facilities provide their services on an outpatient basis. However, residential care was offered by 112 facilities statewide, giving the people that are needing intense inpatient care a lot of choices. Almost all of Minnesota’s drug and alcohol treatment centers are privately operated, either for- or non-profit. 25 are owned by the state, but that doesn’t mean that these are the only options available. About 50% of Minnesota drug and alcohol treatment centers receive some amount of public funding, and 70% work closely with hospitals. You should talk to your doctor because they can recommend a good treatment program.
