Missouri is far above the national average in terms of drug and alcohol abuse, and the problem is especially prevalent among the state’s youth. In 2007, the last year for which we have data, almost 465,000 were either abusing or addicted to alcohol, and about 40,000 had an admitted drug addiction. Missouri’s drug and alcohol rehab centers to double in the last fourteen years.

Other drugs are a problem for the state as well. Those that are living in the rural areas in western Missouri may think they are immune to the drug problem, but that couldn’t be further than the truth. Meth use is common in the area, and cocaine and heroin use is on the rise in the metro areas of Kansas City and St. Louis. Club drugs like ketamine, PCP, and ecstasy are common here as well. These particular drugs are mostly used by young people, contributing to the high rate of admission to Missouri’s drug and alcohol rehab centers for youth.

Missouri’s drug and alcohol treatment is provided by the state’s 257 treatment facilities. Of those, almost two hundred are privately run and not for profit, and nearly fifty were private and for profit. The remainder are owned and operated by the state. Over seventy three percent of Missouri’s drug and alcohol treatment centers receive public funding, which makes rehab available to more people in the state.

Most drug and alcohol rehab in Missouri is provided on an outpatient basis, but there are sixty seven facilities that provide residential treatment for the worst addictions, and to help people recuperate from long-time drug abuse. A residential program allows the patient to focus solely on their recovery.

All of Missouri’s drug and alcohol treatment centers don’t offer the same services, so those seeking help in the state should know all of their options. If opiate addiction treatment is needed, there are only ten centers statewide that offer them. In 2006, there were fourteen programs and seventy doctors that were certified to distribute buprenorphine, which is a medication that helps with cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Most of Missouri’s drug and alcohol treatment programs use a combination of detox, behavioral therapy, and counseling.

No matter what program you choose, you should get help immediately if you think that you are addicted to drugs or alcohol. This couldn’t be more true if you are a young person. The earlier a person starts abusing alcohol or drugs, the greater the likelihood that they will become an addict. A little over eleven percent of Missouri’s high school freshmen had tried marijuana before they turned 13, and almost half of high school seniors had done it at least one time. The best way to keep abuse from turning into addiction is to catch the problem early and begin treatment in one of Missouri’s drug and alcohol rehab centers immediately.
