Nebraska is right in the middle of the Midwestern US, and like so many other Midwestern states, it has a huge problem with methamphetamine. The DEA says that meth is the biggest drug concern in Nebraska, and the drug accounts for almost ten percent of all admissions to Nebraska’s drug and alcohol treatment centers. Meth admissions are second to those for alcohol, which was responsible for over seventy five percent of all Nebraska treatment center admissions in 2007. Alcohol is the biggest issue in Nebraska, and the state is in the top ten for alcoholism and binge drinking.

Many Nebraskans think that there’s no risk to using alcohol (only slightly more than 36% of the state’s residents think binge drinking is risky. This problem affects people from all age groups and backgrounds, and teenagers in the state are just as likely to have alcohol addictions as the adults are. That means that a lot of people in Nebraska are in need of help for drug and alcohol abuse.

For the people of Nebraska, there are drug and alcohol rehab centers around the state there to help. As of 2006, there were 107 centers statewide. Of those, four were tribally owned, fifteen were state owned, and the remaining were privately owned, either for- or non-profit. However, most of the private facilities receive public funding, and almsot half have contracts with local hospitals. Those facts make it a lot easier for the people of Nebraska to get help when they need it.

Fortunately, Nebraska is below the national average of people needing treatment for alcohol or drug abuse but not receiving it. Potential patients have many choices when they decide to get help, but they should know their options. Almost eighty percent of Nebraska’s drug and alcohol treatment centers provide outpatient care, and there are forty residential treatment facilities in the state. These facilities are for those with deeply-entrenched addictions, and they help to get people clean by taking them out of the environment that caused them to start using. If a person needs treatment for an opiate addiction, there is only one program that offers such treatment in Nebraska. There are 22 doctors that are certified to give buprenorphine, a drug that helps with cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

No matter how you get help, if you think you are addicted to drugs or alcohol, you should get treated as soon as possible. This holds especially true for teenagers. Those exposed to substance abuse before they turn fourteen are at much greater risk of developing an addiction. Almost all of Nebraska’s drug and alcohol treatment centers will be able to evaluate the patient, and help them get to the next step in their treatment. Drugs are dangerous and it can be tough to break an addiction, but with the help of Nebraska’s drug rehab centers, it is possible.
