Drug addiction in Iowa is sort of a mixed bag. The state ranks far below the national average in illegal drug use, but the admission rates to Iowa’s drug and alcohol treatment facilities tell a different story. Iowa’s rate of admission to treatment for alcohol issues is almost twice the national average. Admissions for both methamphetamine and marijuana addiction are also quite high, so the state is aggressively trying to make care available to all who need it. As we said, the three major areas of concern for the state of Iowa’s rehabilitation facilities are marijuana, alcohol, and methamphetamine. The DEA says that marijuana is grown in the state, as well as being imported from Mexico, Canada, and a few other states- and meth is coming from perhaps thousands of homemade meth labs that have sprung up all over the state. These drugs affect everyone- not just those from the cities.

To fight the problems that are caused by alcohol and drug abuse, there were 125 drug and alcohol treatment centers in Iowa as of 2006. Out of these, 114 were private, either non- or for-profit, and the remaining few were operated by state and local agencies. Eighty-two percent of all rehab centers in Iowa receive at least some form of public support, which makes their services available to a lot more people.

Those that are seeking drug treatment in Iowa should know that every program isn’t the same. Different programs have different levels of service and treatment methods, and due to the high rate of alcohol abuse in the state of Iowa, alcohol treatment programs are far more common than those for other kinds of drugs. Only four centers in the entire state of Iowa offer treatment for opiate addiction, and even fewer are licensed to distribute buprenorphine, a medication that is used to dampen cravings and manage painful withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, most rehab centers in Iowa are run on an outpatient basis. For those that need constant monitoring, there are 28 residential care facilities in Iowa. These facilities attempt to break the addiction by removing the person from temptation and the environment that got them started using drugs to begin with.

Various programs are offered through contracts between area hospitals and almost a hundred treatment centers in the state of Iowa, and if the nearest center doesn’t offer the program you need, broaden your search area. Of course, the best program will address all three areas of treatment- detoxification, counseling, and therapy.
