North Carolina’s mountains and fields, while they may look tranquil, hide their share of secrets. The state has seen many marijuana growing and sale operations, further contributing to its growing drug abuse problem. North Carolina is above the national average in terms of drug addiction and abuse. Marijuana is widely available, but the biggest concern for the authorities in the state is cocaine. Of the over twenty thousand people admitted to North Carolina’s drug and alcohol treatment centers, almost thirty percent were seeking help for a cocaine addiction.

Alcohol abuse and addiction are problematic as well. Over eighty five percent of people who were treated in North Carolina’s drug and alcohol centers admitted to an alcohol problem. For many, alcohol addiction can lead to problems with other substances as well. Statistics show that many who abuse alcohol also have other issues, and many people who are addicted to drugs got their start by either drinking or smoking marijuana.

The drug and alcohol treatment centers in North Carolina are reporting an increase in admissions for all drugs. Especially serious is the sharp increase in admissions for addictions to opiates. Prescription drugs like Oxycontin, Vicodin, and Xanax are intensely addictive and produce an euphoric feeling when crushed and snorted or shot with a needle. Those over sixty are vulnerable to the unintentional misuse of these drugs, and teenagers can obtain them from friends, at parties and at school- even from their own homes. The DEA says that one quarter of all high school students in North Carolina have used prescription drugs for nonmedical purposes.

As of 206, there were 362 drug and alcohol rehab facilities in the state of North Carolina. They are almost evenly split between private, not- and for-profit facilities. Also, there are a few rehab centers owned by the state and that’s tribally owned. This gives North Carolina’s residents a lot of options when it comes to getting help for a drug addiction.

Most of the people that asked for help in North Carolina get their treatment on an outpatient basis, but those with more severe addictions can get treatment at one of the sixty residential treatment centers in the state, or go a little farther. A little less than half of North Carolina’s rehab centers are publicly funded, so there are plenty of options for those who need help. Those that need treatment for an opiate addiction may have a bit harder time finding help, because there are only 34 programs that offer buprenorphine. Those that need treatment should carefully consider their options and get evaluated by a doctor, who will be able to recommend a good program that will detoxify the body, offer counseling, and give behavioral therapy.
