A report released in June of 2009 says that one in ten Michigan residents were either addicted to drugs, or had used them within the last year- that’s about eight hundred thousand people with drug issues in Michigan. Over seventy thousand of these people got treatment through state-funded initiatives. Michigan provides its people with the treatment they need through a system of public and private treatment centers. While Michigan is above the national average in alcohol addiction, illegal drug use continues to rise while treatment admissions for alcoholism are decreasing.

One troubling thing, as is the case in so many other parts of the country, is the non-medical use of prescription medications. This trend doesn’t discriminate- it affects people of all ages, socioeconomic status, and backgrounds. Most of the drugs in question fall into the opiate category- such as Oxycontin and Percocet. Prescriptions for Oxycontin have increased by a third, and users of this drug cause about ninety percent of pharmacy thefts and fake prescriptions, as well as many home invasions.

If you think that you or someone you love has an alcohol or drug problem, you should seek help as soon as you can. Early detection and treatment of a drug addiction in one of Michigan’s 539 drug and alcohol rehab centers is essential if it’s to be beaten for good. More than half of Michigan’s rehab facilities receive public funding, which makes them a lot more accessible to its people.

Michigan has plenty of drug and alcohol treatment centers. Twelve of them are tribally run, with two of those offering programs in Native American languages. The remainder are a mix of private, nonprofit and for-profit facilities and state-run centers. However, don’t be put off by the term “private”- most of Michigan’s centers are partly publicly funded.

All people seeking drug and alcohol treatment in Michigan should learn more about the variety of programs and rehab facilities in the state. Treatment methods will differ from one program to another, and not all rehab centers in Michigan will offer all services. Those that are seeking residential care have to select from one of almost ninety Michigan treatment facilities, or they can go out of state. Also, not all of Michigan’s drug treatment programs can offer buprenorphine or methadone when they are treating an opiate addiction. Only 37 facilities statewide were licensed to offer those medications in 2006, the most recent reporting year, and 69 treatment programs and 316 doctors in Michigan were licensed to use buprenorphine.
