During the last few decades, Indiana has actually been nearer to the bottom of the list of drug and alcohol abusing states. It’s well below the national average in all areas- save for one area. A 2008 SAMHSA report says that the rate of abuse of prescription medicines in Indiana is among the top ten in America for every age group except for those under seventeen. The recreational use of prescription drugs such as Valium, Xanax, and Vicodin affects people from all walks of life-even those who thought it could never happen to them. People over sixty years old are especially at risk for the unintentional abuse of prescription medicine, while high school-aged kids in the state also have access to the drugs at parties, clubs, and even at home. When crushed and snorted or injected, these pills provide an almost instant rush, and can rapidly become addictive. The addict needs more and more of the drug to get the effects, and usually cannot stop without help.
As of 2006, there were 338 drug treatment and rehab facilities in the state of Indiana. Out of those, 321 were privately run, either for- or non-profit. The remainder are owned and operated by various state government agencies. This doesn’t mean that options for drug or alcohol treatment in Indiana, because over sixty percent of facilities in Indiana receive at least some public funding.
Those seeking drug treatment in Indiana should learn about the various treatment methods and options that are available to them. Not all facilities offer the same programs, and the center that’s closest to their home isn’t always the best choice. Of all treatment centers in Indiana, over ninety percent are run on an outpatient basis, and there are only forty-three rehabs in the state of Indiana that offer residential treatment. If opiate addiction treatment is needed in Indiana, there are 15 centers statewide that provide such programs. There are fifty-five drug treatment programs in Indiana that are allowed to dispense buprenorphine, and there are also a few centers that take a more natural approach to drug treatment.
As you can see, the rate of illicit drug use in Indiana is climbing. Prescription drug misuse remains a powerful threat to the people of the state, so nothing could be more important than the early detection and prompt treatment of drug addiction. The highly addictive nature of many of these drugs makes an addiction extremely hard to treat, but with the right treatment program and a good support system, it is possible.
