Like a lot of other Midwestern states, Oklahoma is experiencing serious problems with the use, manufacture, and distribution of methamphetamine. Its long border shared with Texas makes it an ideal entry point for drugs coming north from Mexico, and its roads make it easier than ever to bring in the illicit cargo. According to the DEA, meth is the biggest drug concern for the state of Oklahoma. That’s a fact that can be backed up by Oklahoma’s drug and alcohol treatment centers, which tell us of a sharp increase in the number of admissions for meth addiction. Another drug that comes over the border by the ton, and is widely abused in Oklahoma, is marijuana.

Meth is extremely cheap, very easy to obtain, and popular for the almost instant rush it provides. A survey involving Oklahoma’s children tells us that more and more school aged children are being exposed to (and using) drugs. Teens can smoke marijuana and sell pills to one another on their lunch hour. Of all the fifty states, Oklahoma often ranks near the top as far as nonmedical use of prescription drugs is concerned. It can happen to anyone- you may have a need for drug or alcohol treatment in Oklahoma before you even realize what’s happening.

The choice of a drug or alcohol rehab in Oklahoma is primarily influenced by location and price. Other determining factors should be the type of services offered, and what they need to address their addiction. In 2206, there were 176 substance abuse treatment centers in Oklahoma. Fifteen were tribally operated, 109 were private nonprofit, twenty nine were private for profit, and the rest were run by the state. The great majority (65%) of rehab centers in Oklahoma are publicly funded, which makes them available to more of the people. Don’t let the “private” label make you think that treatment is out of reach!

Those that are dealing with drug or alcohol addiction certainly don’t expect it, and are often ill equipped to deal with it. According to a nationwide survey, almost all (99%) of drug and alcohol treatment centers assess and evaluate every patient, making it easy for people to find out how seriously addiction is affecting their family. At that point, the family can decide what kind of program will suit their needs. Almost ninety percent of Oklahoma’s rehab centers provide treatment on an outpatient basis, and there are forty seven facilities that offer residential treatment. However, only eight centers statewide have opiate programs, so those needing that kind of help might have to go a little further to find it.

As is the case in many states, a successful drug treatment program offers a combination of detox, behavioral therapy, and counseling after the program is complete. All those pieces, when put together, offer patients the greatest chance of a positive outcome.
