Question by Rachel: what kind of degree would i need to be able to become a case manager at a drug and alcohol rehab center?
I am in recovery myself and have went down a long dark road and have came out on the other side. I know first hand the pain and heartache that people in recovery go through and I want to help others and give back. I have found a school that has a fast track alcohol and drug counseling program that after 10 months they send you a diploma for that and then you have the option to continue to get your associates degree. I’m not a spring chicken so I’m trying to do the fastest thing possible and I’m not looking to go back to school for 4 years or more!! Please help!!! Thank you

Hi Rachel! Congratulations on your recovery! It is so nice that you want to help others in their path to recovery. According to this site http://www.guidetoonlineschools.com/degrees/human-services/substance-abuse, “A certificate in alcohol and drug counseling takes the least amount of time to earn, but these programs are generally only open to individuals who are already certified counselors. These certificates simply provide more specialized training and information to those who are interested in working specifically with people who are suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. While earning these certificates, students will study proven rehabilitation techniques and explore solutions to the challenges they will face as counselors.
To earn an associate degree, students will take more general classes. They will study psychology and sociology, learning how people come to be drug and alcohol addicts. Communication classes will also be required of associate students. The same sorts of classes will be taken at four-year universities, but bachelor’s degrees require more credits. Students will study actual counseling techniques and cases and they will also learn more about the effects that drugs and alcohol have on people.
Graduate degrees in counseling are required by most states in order to become a certified counselor. Most professionals earn master’s degrees in counseling with a specialization in alcohol drug and counseling. General knowledge of psychology and sociology is assumed, so curriculum will concentrate on techniques and theories of counseling. To earn doctoral degrees, students have to choose a specialized area of interest, such as a single patient case study or working with people of a certain socioeconomic background. They also conduct original research and write extensive dissertation papers on their chosen topic.”
Good luck with whatever you choose! 🙂

Question by Flower Player: what are some ways that people broke drug addictions historically?
I am doing a report but after tons and tons of research, I CANNOT FIND HISTORICAL DIAGNOSES FOR DRUGS, I am looking for ways that have been put out of practice, for example, one historical treatment for illness was “leeching” putting a leech on somebody, and letting them drink out all of the “bad blood”. Once again, I am looking for discontinued practices for breaking drug abuse.

Your search may have been futile, because for a long time, what we know as “drug addiction” wasn’t recognized as a mental or social problem.
Some other treatments you may want to look into though, is shock treatment. Also, I see in my psychology text book, that in ancient Rome, addiction (but also a number of other problems were treated by soaking the “patient” in a hot bath and cooling them off rapidly.

Question by Maricopa County: Will activists blame Americans for this and why is there drug rehab in MEXICO activists said MEXICANS did not?
Will activists blame Americans for this and why is there drug rehab in MEXICO activists said MEXICANS did not ever use drugs and this is why the drugs come here ?CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — At least 30 gunmen burst into a drug rehabilitation center in a Mexican border state capital and opened fire, killing 19 men and wounding several others, police said.
The killings happened late Thursday at the Faith and Life center in Chihuahua city, about 210 miles (350 kilometers) south of Ciudad Juarez and the border with El Paso, Texas, said state police spokesman Fidel Banuelos.
They came a day after unidentified assailants killed one man and wounded another at a rehab center in Ciudad Juarez.
The men at the Faith and Life center were roused out of bed shortly before 11 p.m. and placed face-down along a hallway, the center’s director, Cristian Rey Ramirez, told The Associated Press.
Ramirez was alerted to the attack by the center’s pastor by telephone.
“He tells me, ‘You know what, come here because they just killed everyone,'” Rey said. “There was no warning.”
The attackers left messages accusing the victims of being criminals, Banuelos said.
Four other people were hospitalized but their conditions were not immediately known.
The victims ranged in age from 30 to 40, and included a blind man, said the Rev. Rene Castillo, a minister who gives weekly sermons at the center.
“Everyone is so scared now,” he said, adding that violence is “all everyone talks about, especially with all the threats that have been made.”
President Felipe Calderon, whose war on drugs has claimed nearly 23,000 lives since he took office in late 2006, issued a statement Friday condemning the shootings.
“They are outrageous acts that reinforce the conviction of the need to fight criminal groups who carry out such barbaric acts with full legal force,” he said.
Police have said that two of Mexico’s six major drug cartels are exploiting rehab centers to recruit hit men and drug smugglers, often threatening to kill those who don’t cooperate. Others are killed for failing to pay for drugs or betraying a dealer.
More than 60 people have died in mass shootings at rehab clinics in a little less than two years.
