Were you well treated by staff in general?

Including the male staff? Did anyt of the male staff try (or even seem to try) improper behavior while restrained, searched, etc.???

Were you treated w/ dignity and respect by the staff regardless of their gender? Did they seem to abuse their power or use it to genuinely help you and/or the others (This last question is asking yiour honest “from-the-heart” reply; don’t feel th need to protect rotten sadists where it’s not due).

Also feel free 2 reply w/ any (potentially) POSITIVE experiences as well while inpatient (if any).

In the late 60’s I had the displeasure to be forced (by a court order) into a state hospital. I was a minor and the abuse that was heaped upon us is far too graphic to share on this website. In those days, if a child was found to be a habitual runaway, attempted suicide, used ANY TYPE of habit forming drugs, or did unsafe things of a sexual nature (promiscuous), they could be court ordered and taken out of the care of their parents and handed over to a state mental institution for “observation & treatment”. Abuse was something none of us could ever prove. We were over medicated and strapped down if we resisted and no one would believe us if we tried to say we were sexually abused against our will because we had already been deemed to be “troublemakers”.

500 milligrams of thorazine 3x a day kept most of us in a drool state and we often slid off our chairs in the group therapy sessions. We were then told that we were being “uncooperative” and our stay was extended well beyond the min 30 day observation time. I was there for almost 4 months and it haunts me to this very day. I saw horrid acts of self abuse in that place and experienced the abuse of my “captors” on a daily basis. Talking back got us the straight jacket or shock treatment. I enjoyed the light show therapy sessions….to a point, then they just got to be annoying. I did receive a stellar rapid-advanced education that left me unable to deal with the slower paced public school system that I had to go back to!

I often wonder if it ruined my life in other ways too. I have never gone back for any type of mental health assistance because of my fear of getting locked up again. I carry the “stigma” with me. I know I need to get over it and seek help because I am having many flashbacks lately that scare (greatly concern) me. So, I isolate myself. Not much actually “scares” me. I have a lot of anxiety and trust issues. I just don’t want to become a burden to my kid and be known as the crazy lady who lives with her kid. I want to keep my independence. I never want to get locked up again.

Question by Annie: Why do AA people always speak in cult jargon?
When I confront members of AA regarding the obvious religious nature of the cult, they always reply back with cult jargon. This proves my point exactly that once people are indoctrinated, they give up thinking for themselves and rely on the mind-numbing jargon of the group.

When I say to someone “You are brainwashed,” they often reply back “Good. My brain needed a good washing.”

Other examples:
“One day at a time.”
“Let go and let God.”
“KISS-Keep it simple, stupid.”
“It works. It really does.”
“Keep comin’ back.”
“Keep an open mind.”
“There is no chemical solution to a spirtual problem”
“Don’t intellectualize—Utilitize”

Often when I post questions like this on Answers, I will get a reply from an AAer. They often reply in cult jargon. It is so funny. They will say “Don’t drink and go to a meeting.” or “It works. Keep commin’ back.” or “It works if you work it.” Then they put “Friend of Bill W’s” in the source. They do not think on their own so th
ey rely on the cult jargon written by Bill Wilson. By the way, Bill W. was a psychotic womanizer who was obsessed with the occult. He actually thinks he got the steps from talking to spirits. What a freak!

Why do they speak in cult jargon?

I really don’t have much experience with AA- though I have visted two AA locations for a class assignment. I really didn’t pick up on their ‘jargon’ talk,’ but I don’t think harshly on AA. Some people need other people to help them through their addictions. And sometimes they need to be around other people who know exactly how they feel. The people there really supported one another and it seemed liked these meetings helped them alot. I think calling it a cult in a bit far-fetched. AA is not for everyone, but it’s not bad.
