Question by Joni: What is the best way to support a friend in rehab?
hi, my best friend since I was a little girl checked in to rehab for two years on November 6th. I get to see him on Christmas day for the first time which is so so so exciting for me! I know that we will get to write letters and after 3 months he will be able to make phone calls and I will be able to visit him on Saturday from 7-10 P.M. I’m trying to be as supportive as possible with this whole ordeal. I’ve never done this before & I live over 2 hrs away so going see him every Saturday will be hard to do, but I’m willing to do it as often as I possibly can…I plan on going see him once every month, but I’m scared that won’t be enough. I just want to know what I can do to be THE most fully supportive of him?!
I want to add that we are strictly friends – the friend I’m talking about likes boys. I can see why it would sound like we have more than friendship, but we just have a really strong friendship and always have- I doubt he would ever relate me to the reason why he does drugs or think of me and think of drugs, I am the only one that has really supported him and I have never done drugs and never will he knows this, and has told me he needs friends like me in his life to keep him on the right track!

Two years for Rehab ? That’s a very long time. What can you do to be supportive ? Well, I would say, first of all, be a very upbeat when you write to him or when you visit. No negitive thoughts. Smile, be just like if you were setting at home.
There seems to be more than friendship here. You want to be the most supportive of him. If you do have feelings for him, more than friendship, let him know how you feel, when he can see you and talk to you. Joni, I don’t know why he is rehab for two years, just be careful. Please let me know how things are going.

I asked a question the other day and I got many responses, I was surprised! now I have decided to put my husband into an alcohol treatment center in iowa. can anyone recommend one? It must not be a co-ed facility, I do not want him around other women who are drunks, that will just encourage him, so, what is a good all male alcoholism treatment center?
